Welcome to the MCSearch: Advanced Strategies tutorial!

This tutorial will demonstrate additional strategies to improve your searches in MCSearch.

We recommend completing the tutorial "Introduction to MCSearch" before starting this tutorial.

This is an online guide that will introduce you to the Milligan College Library resources in real time on a live webpage.

Move through the guide by using the arrows at the bottom of the box.

Use the actual webpage to complete the guide activities.

If you are off-campus, you will be asked to log in. Use your Milligan Network ID and password. This is the same one you use for Canvas.

Let's begin by searching Appalachian Trail

Type: Appalachian Trail

in the MCSearch box. Click the "Search" button.

Look at the date range slider in the left hand side of the page.

What is the publication date of the earliest result?

What if your instructor only wants current resources on your topic?  Move the arrow on the left hand side of the slider so that your results are limited to the past 10 years.

How many results do you have now?

You can also limit your results to a particular type of source.

Check the box next to Academic Journals under Source Types on the left hand side of the page.

You may need to scroll DOWN.

You may need to click "Show More" to see Academic Journals. Click the "Academic Journal" box.

Note: Your previous date limiter is still set.

How many academic journal articles are there about the Appalachian Trail written in the last ten years?

Your instructor specifically stated that you must find a peer-reviewed journal article.  A peer-reviewed journal article is a scholarly article that has gone through a rigorous review by scholars in the field before being published.

Look above the date slider. Click the Peer-Reviewed box under Limit To:

Note: All previous settings remain in place.

After clicking the Peer-Reviewed box, what happened to the number of results?

If you are short on time and really need a resource right now, you can limit to Full Text which only gives results that are available full text from the library.

Remember: This removes results (sometimes very good results) on your topic that might be available through Interlibrary Loan.

Check the Full Text box under Limit To:

Note: All previous settings remain in place.

How many peer-reviewed full text articles published on the Appalachian Trail in the last 10 years are available from the Milligan Library?

If your results go too low after using a limiter, you can undo any of the limiters.

This was a quick overview of some useful limiters.  There are more limiters that you can explore in the left hand margin.
